In the 1970s, Lake Dolores Waterpark was an oasis for those seeking refuge from the heat and distraction from the conflict in Vietnam. With eight waterslides, three diving boards, a lagoon and 'the Big Bopper'; a long group raft ride with fun assured for the entire family, the site was no doubt a place of positive memories for many people. However, despite continual efforts to refinance the site, it lies motionless in Southern California's Mojave Desert like a sun-bleached skeleton, waiting for something to reawaken its once glorious enterprise.
That something is Altered Route, a cinematic skateboarding film by Brett Novak featuring street freestyle wiz Kilian Martin. Interest in the practice of skateboarding is not a prerequisite for viewer enjoyment, but simply an appreciation for the process in which the most desolate parts of the urban environment can retain memory and place.
